Gokulaashtamiya Shubhaashayagalu! Janmaashtami Ki Shubhkaamnaayein! Krishna Nee Begane Baaro...

.

I used to hear Smt.M.S. Subbulakshmi singing my favourite song, 'Krishna nee begane baaro', a Kannada Krithi on Lord Krishna, by Purandara Dasa,  since I was small.  We used to go to concerts and hear her singing in person.

Then I heard an American, John Higgins, singing the same song in radio!  It used to come everyday in a Bangalore station and Madras station! We got used to his voice too!

Then I got hold of a cassette, 'Radha Maadhavam', in which Bombay Jayashree sang this song.  I loved all the songs in this album.  She has got a beautiful voice.  I used to play this everyday after my doze of 'Sangeeth Saritha' in Vividh Bharati!  Hear this now and enjoy!

Then came the 'Colonial cousins'! I noticed even small children humming this version.  It is good!

Today is Lord Krishna's birthday...Our Wikipedia gives all the details of Lord Krishna's birthday! Have a look!

He, who has let go of hatred,
Who treats all beings with kindness and compassion,
Who is always serene,
Unmoved by pain or pleasure,
Free of the 'I' and 'Mine',
Self-controlled, firm and patient,
His whole mind focussed on me...
That is the man I love best.

JANMAASHTAMIYA SHUBHAASHAYAGALU!

LET OUR KRISHNA BLESS US WITH PEACE AND HAPPINESS!

KRISHNA NEE BEGANE BAARO...KRISHNA, COME SOON TO SAVE US IN ANY FORM!

RAMAKRISHNAN RAMANATHAN: Thank you, Ramakrishnan!

Festival days in our houses are unique, aren't they?

Have you heard Higgin's voice before? We used to hear just 3-4 songs all the time! This song of his was famous! He loved Carnatic music. Died in an accident at quite a young age, I read.

I couldn't get this song in MS's voice!

SAI CHARAN: Thank you, Sai! Did you visit any temple there? All the best to you!

RENU: Thank you, Renu! I did murukku, salt and sweet seedai, aval (poha) with jaggery, coconut, cardamom. Then we keep curd, butter and milk in 3 small cups near the god.

How did you do, Renu?

There is one song that moved me very much when I was young - 'Aayar padi Maligayil thai madiyil kandrinai pol'. The version that I listened to back then had a deep voice - I remember it very clearly even now. But the version of this song available on Youtube is not even half as good! Are you aware of this song? Beautiful one.

I love the colonial cousins version of 'Krishna Ni Begane...' Just brilliant fusion. I need to listen to Radha's version. I have not heard the original song - only the fusion.

Wishing you and your family a very happy Janmashtami/Krishna Jayanthi :)

I love TMS's 'karpagavalli' and many more devotional songs of his. Seergaazhi Govindarajan's 'vinaayagane' and many more devotional songs are good. I don't remember hearing your song in TMS's voice. 'Pullanguzhal' of his is my favourite.

Even my son liked colonial cousins' version of Krishna nee! These people make youngsters like our classical songs!

Bombay Jayashree's is very good. Tell me how you felt after hearing it. All three singers sang this song in their own versions! All are good in their own way!

Happy Krishna Jayanthi!
My mouth is watering thinking of all the seedais and murukkus you have made.
Only a few lucky ones can get to taste it.
My sister who lives in Madras also would have made everything in the traditional way, and she also cooks very well. I wish i was in Madras during such times.
